Self drive doesn't sound like a good idea. Check out the Tripadvisor forum for advice on self drive. Would be suitable only for very experienced dune drivers and permits are required. There are a number of operators who run tours. Much safer and easier to go with experts who know the terrain/tides etc. We had a wonderful exciting time with Sandwich Harbour 4x4 and would highly recommend them.

And do you think it would be feasible to drive from Walvis Bay to Sesriem right after the tour finishes at 12pm? Would we make it to Sesriem before dark? Thank you!

Well Jollie J of Ottawa, you certainly know how to pose a question! Tides are different around the world and change daily as you probably know and I am not a local resident. There is a web site that will give you all you need to know. I'm not allowed to post a web site link but if you type in walvis-bay-tides-09-2017 you should get to the site. I checked it out for 6th Sept 2017 - morning high tide is 0324 and low tide 0917. Tide change is +33 minutes a day so by 10th September on me calculations low tide in Walvis Bay would be 11.23. Based on this and I recommend you check it out 8th September would be the optimum to allow you to do the 4x4 and have a reasonable chance of getting to Sesriem. Sesriem is about 4 and a quarter hours uninterrupted drive from Walvis Bay. It's not plain and easy driving but mainly on surfaced roads if you choose the right road. People advise the longer way round to avoid the C something-or-other but I took it and found it to be well within my driving capabilities in a 4x4 at a steady pace. So if you were to leave Walvis at 1pm latest you'd be at your destination by whichever route in 5 hours. I took all day to drive there but I stopped and deviated often. Have a truly great trip as Namibia is a top destination. Chris.

We were on a tour with other people. We did not met Herman. As for the Sandwich Harbour 4 X 4 tour, it is worth the time.
