Pancake lenses are thinner than aspheric lenses. The Varjo Aero and the Pimax Crystal use them, and neither are close to the form factor of the big screen beyond. They are also heavier. The brightness loss can be overcome by bright screens. This has been the problem with micro OLED headsets that use pancake lenses.

To answer your question though, pancake lenses, especially Metas, are really a big deal. All the main issues that people have with fresnel lenses are not only no longer an issue, but a strong point of the headset.

Having the quest 3 now, there is no comparison. It is crystal clear edge to edge, even with the IPD totally fucked up (meaning, even when you set it poorly, its still clear, its like you cant miss the sweetspot if you tried).
