The group of atoms remaining when a hydrogen atom is removed from an aromatic compound is called an aryl group. The most common aryl group is derived from benzene (C 6 H 6) by removing one hydrogen atom (C 6 H 5) and is called a phenyl group, from pheno, an old name for benzene.
