The first humble Lego sets of generic bricks, simple buildings and basic wheels paved the way for the vast bustling brick universe millions play in today. We owe that creative first generation of Lego builders back in the 1950s a debt for laying the foundations.

1961 and 1962 saw the introduction of the first Lego wheels, an addition that expanded the potential for building cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles from Lego bricks. Also, during this time, the Lego Group introduced toys targeted explicitly toward the pre-school market.

The first LEGO sets are all based around replicating buildings seen in a small town. The more fantastical Castle and Space themes wouldn't come about till the 1970s. The LEGO sets' initial focus on the mundane can be seen on display in one of the first, a one-car garage. The set featured a plastic door that served as the door to the garage.

In 1978, LEGO launched their first theme - LEGO Space. Several sets were launched to celebrate this new theme - the Mobile Rocket Launcher, Alpha-1 Rocket Base, Space Cruiser and Space Command Center. It was the first of many themes throughout the years.
