Each gas has a unique breakdown voltage and emission spectrum. Nitrogen, with the highest breakdown voltage, glows when a hand temporarily lowers the resistance to current flow in the tube. The distinct colors of each gas result from electron energy transitions specific to each element, which is the principle of spectroscopy.
