What Gives the Morpho Butterfly Its Magnificent Blue?

There are 29 accepted species and 147 accepted subspecies of the Morpho butterfly genus. They are found mostly in the primary forests of South America, Mexico, and Central America.Morphos have a very distinctive, slow, bouncy flight pattern due to their wing area being enormous relative to their body size. Many of the Morpho species are metallic shimmery shades of blue and it is thought that the flash of the iridescent blue to their dark underside confuses predators when in flight.#morpho #bluem

The Blue Morpho butterfly, or Morpho peleides, are experts at hanging out incognito. The underside of their wings have large, eyespot patterns that are used as a defense mechanism. These patterns are thought to mimic the eyes of larger animals, such as birds or mammals, which can deter predators from attacking. Visit the gardens to see these spectacular butterflies up close!
