On March 18, 1945, a young, newly married naval aviator flew from USS Intrepid on his first combat mission. This pilot, Loren Isley, never returned. Fifty years later, a Japanese fisherman found what is thought to be the remnants of his F4U-1D Corsair. #OTD in 1964, Intrepid set a fleet refueling at sea record by rigging oiler USS Pawcatuck in 6 minutes, 39 seconds! Refueling at sea was a delicate operation, captured here on film by Intrepid crew members in the 1960s and 70s.
